Dennis Helfer and Elaine Helfer were the parents of Helfer when she was born. Her parents are of German, English and Swedish descendance. She attended William E. Hay Composite High School located in Stettler. Alongside her sisters Trena Tammy Tara She resided as a farm worker on the family grain farm. At age 17 a modeling scout from an agency discovered Helfer as she waited at the front of a line for entry into the cinema.
